Letter to My Future Self
DW #91 š”
This month I started reading The 5 Types of Wealth by Sahil Bloom. Iām only a couple chapters in and itās already one of my favorite books Iāve read in the past year.
In the book, Sahil unpacks the 5 āwealthā categories that make for a fulfilling life - financial wealth, physical wealth, mental wealth, social wealth, and time wealth.
I think what Iāve loved most about the book is how he presents these as distinct aspects of your overall lifeās āscorecardā, especially because for me (and many young people) it can be easy to get into the mindset that only one of them - financial wealth - matters at the end of it all. In reality, the finance category my be the least important.
The most important of all of them is the final one, time. Itās the ultimate finite resource; once you use it, you canāt get it back. Itās so so important to use your time wisely, to cherish your time, and to respect your future self by building your ātime wealthā throughout the course of your life.
One of my favorite exercises from the book for building ātime wealthā is to write a letter to your future self. Sahil gives an examples of a letter he wrote to his 30-yo self when was 18. He outlines a few goals and aspirations he has for his future self and give himself some grace (you can read his here).
I thought it was beautiful, and very vulnerable - rarely do we sit down and get really introspective about where we want to be in life down the road. And this is a great mechanism to do that.
So I decided to try it myself. I followed his framework and decided to sit down at a coffee shop this past week and write a short letter to myself for 5 years from now. I outlined a few of my hopes for the future, a few things Iād like to keep doing, and some things Iād like to improve.
I wrote it as a little blog post here in beehiiv, and once I was happy with it, I scheduled it to send in 5 years on my 32nd birthday at 9am (btw, pretty cool that beehiiv allows you to schedule that far out :-))
Hereās the image below. I figured by sharing it here, maybe some one reading this will be inspired to do the same. These are the little gifts you can do for yourself that I think make life a little bit more worth while.
Enjoy it, and take care !
